I can’t believe it’s that time of year again. It’s the time we say so long summer and hello new school year! With every new school year, I like to create a resource for families to do together to set the tone for the new school year. I want families to spend time together in the Word of God, which I believe helps children start the new school year feeling God’s peace. So if you’re looking for a back-to-school devotional for your family (or your church families), let me introduce you to Back-to-School Faith Time Capsule!

Back-to-School Faith Time Capsule is a family faith kit that will help kids create a time capsule for the new school year that is related to their faith in God. These back-to-school activities for kids will help them think about their relationship with God at this moment in time. At the end of the school year, each family can open up the time capsule and look back to see how their faith in God has grown over the school year.

Here’s why I began creating this resource…

One of the things I have been more intentional about doing lately is trying to write down memories I have of my grandparents, parents, and kids. I want to remember their stories and the things they have done so that I can continue to pass down their memories from generation to generation. I want the faith of my family in God to be remembered throughout all our generations. And I want to help my church families (and your church families) do the same thing.

This back-to-school devotional is designed for kids and parents to do together on the evening of the first day of school. This kit includes the following: Family Devotion, First Day of School Questionnaire, Worry Wall printable, Prayer for My School printable, Prayer for My Children printable, and My Family in 2022 printable.

When I began writing this resource, I felt God leading me to focus on 1 Peter 5:7 for the devotion. This verse is about giving our anxieties and fears over to God. In just this past week, I have heard more stories of kids filled with anxiety and fear. And that breaks my heart. One of the activities kids will do is writing down their worries and fears and then families praying over them together. I think that can be a powerful thing!

This kit will also have kids fill out the first day of school questionnaire that focuses on their faith in God, writing a prayer for their school (putting one copy in the time capsule and delivering another copy to their school), having parents write a prayer for their children, and drawing a picture of their family and writing down their favorite family Bible verse. All of these things will help parents and children remember their faith in God at this moment in time. And this will be something families can keep and treasure.

Making Their Time Capsule

After families have finished the back-to-school activities, they will take all the printables and put them into their own family’s time capsule. Families can create their own time capsule which could be a shoebox, plastic container, plastic water bottle, or a large envelope. I’m actually using empty Pringles cans! I plan to provide the empty can and cover it with black 12×12 vinyl (which fits perfectly on a 5.5 oz Pringles can), then attach the social media graphic to the front (which I printed as a 4×6 photo). If you aren’t able to provide a time capsule, families can definitely create their own! This will be a fun (and memorable) faith resource for families!

Help your church families kick off the new school year with this fun back-to-school devotional that will help families capture their faith at this moment in time and will help them remember God and all He has done for them!

After purchasing the Back-to-School Faith Time Capsule pack how do we download it? Does a link come to my email?

Hi Vanessa! Thank you for sharing this time capsule. I’m looking forward to doing this activity (but here in Canada we just started our summer holidays).
How do you distribute this to your KidMin families? For example, for our kids we won’t be starting KidMin until after they’re back in school already. Would you hand out kits on the Sunday before to those families who are in church (even though numbers may still be a bit low until after Labour Day). I’m wondering if maybe during our churchservice at the Childrens Chat I share this capsule and how to use it with the entire church. Thank you for any helpful suggestions!

Hi Sara!! I will give these kits out to the families the Sunday before school starts. If they aren’t at church that morning, then I will deliver them to their houses. I have a team that helps me with deliveries! This is something we started doing during the pandemic and families love getting these kits! Sharing about it during your children’s chat is a great idea, too!
